I have a great debt to the late Tom Harpur, the iconic reporter for the Toronto Star,
who literally rescued me from geographial obscurity when I arrived in Lethbridge from Toronto in 1975 by giving my work unexpected, remarkable coverage
that rippled across the country for some three subsequent decades.
I not-so-poetically thanked him with these words as I handed him a comp copy of
The Emerging Generation in 1985:
"To Tom Harpur - who helped to transform
a potential geographical cage
into a national stage" .
